Happy Tuesday! As you may have seen on our Instastories last week, Whitney and I kicked off our New York Fashion Week adventures with an afternoon color consult and styling at the FourteenJay Salon located in Tribeca. We had such an amazing time and we couldn’t wait to share our experience with all of you. Our sweet photographer Meghann took over 100 photos while we were there. So we tried to narrow it down to give you the best step-by-step details of our first experience with Aveda color and the Eclipting process.
They even treated us to warm towel treatments and hand massages! It was the perfect way to relax after a 5am flight.
Whitney’s color and styling process was completed by Michelle Combs. Whitney had such a great time getting to learn about Michelle’s background and her 20+ years of experience. She did a fabulous job of lightening hair around Whitney’s upper cheeks and temples to add dimension to her rectangular face shape.

Our hair was shiny and beautiful after our color and shine treatments thanks to David and Michelle!
First off, this salon is gorgeous!! FourteenJay is located in a chic part of Tribeca with the cutest cobblestone streets. As we walked in, we were immediately greeted by Michelle Glass, their oh so sweet salon manager. She made sure we had the most delicious tea and snacks to enjoy during our afternoon appointment.
We were shown to our chairs and fitted in sleek black robes to begin our consult. David Adams, one of the owners of the salon, and stylist Michelle Combs then came to greet us and introduce themselves. So much talent and experience for just two people!! They wanted to know all about our hair type, how we normally colored it, how often, and if we had any concerns or things to share about our hair history. It was so nice and refreshing that our stylists wanted to ensure that our hair was thoroughly taken care of while we were there. As their sign says in the entrance of the salon, “beautiful color starts with healthy hair.”
They also completed a scalp camera assessment to see if we had any sensitivity or other issues that would prevent safe hair coloring. After discussing our scalp results and hair goals, we moved onto learning how the eclipting process works. Aveda describes it:
Like an eclipse reframes the sun and the moon, the eclipting™ hair color technique uses Aveda Hair Color to customize color for any hair color, any cut and any guest — thus highlighting the guest’s individual beauty.
It was so interesting to hear all the steps and thought process that goes into creating a custom color process for each client. It was also reassuring to hear how gentle the products are and we absolutely loved knowing that our new glossy color was being applied by some of the very best colorists in the industry.
During the Aveda Eclipting process, large sections of hair are colored through the top, and twisted and lightened to create dimension and illumination. It can be applied to any hair color, cut or style! We loved that this technique is versatile and customizable with results varied from natural to expressive. Since we tend to be more conservative with our hair and beauty routine, our stylists chose to melt several shades into our current hair color to give us the perfect combination of natural hues of light and darkness. We loved the results, as our hair looked so shiny and healthy!
We also wanted to share that we’ve been using the Aveda Invati line the last 6 weeks, and it has really improved the thickness and fullness of our hair that has recently suffered due to thyroid issues.
